9th Grade
Metaphor & Memories
Ninth grade reminds me of the scene where Dorothy Lands in the world of Oz. I will always remember how terrified I was to start high school. It was a whole different atmosphere that I was not use to. The hallways were huge and I followed them to get to my classes. I knew I would have to get through four years then I could graduate. Upper classmen thought we were munchkins because we were still so short. After traveling the overly crowded hallways, I made it to my first class. Algebra one was my favorite class all year. Math came easy to me that’s why I liked it. I met a new friend who I sat next to in math. We both tried very hard to beat one another with the highest grade on our quizzes. We both knew what we wanted to accomplish this year and the years to come. This friend helped me stay focus in all my studies. I wanted to get good grades for myself. I wanted my future to start off great and for a strong start for the challenges ahead. I had pumps along the way with life situations but in the end, it was time to start tenth grade. In our path there was tons of challenging reading material to start. We read Romeo and Juliet which was the hardest book for me to read that year. I still can’t fully understand what Shakespeare is talking about in his writings. I do have to say I am a sucker for a love story so it made it better. The Odyssey was interesting; it kept my interest. We got to watch scenes of the movie while watching it so it was much easier to understand the story line. We also read the sniper which to this day I thought was such a weird book. English was never my best subject so it always seemed hard to figure out what the books were trying to tell us. Along the road we wrote some interesting papers. I do not remember my English teacher giving as many writing assignments as the average ninth grade teacher. We wrote a literary analyst on The Giver and why it was important. We also wrote a sniper letter about what we would have done if we were him. We had to record what we thought were his thoughts and feelings. Any poetry we did this year I absolutely hated. I still hate it to this day and can never write anything I actually like. Overall this year was the most important by teaching me about the person I wanted to become. It helped me realize I wanted to make good grades for myself and my future. The work effort I put into school and other activities also prepared me for the year ahead for when I started my first job. Also the friend that I made this year turned into a friend I would have for a very long time. Introduction My paper is all about writing. Our assignment was to write about why we think writing is important in everyday life or how it is important to us. We were reading the book The Giver at the time so we were suppose to reflect back on the book in our writing. This was suppose to be a literary analysis; but it doesnt sound like one at all in the essay. When I was writing this i remebered that it was hard to think what i used writing in; Now i could name a hundrend ways. I choose this writing because it was one of the few i had from ninth grade and its an absolutly terrible essay that it will show that i've improved so much from that year.
The Writing Lifestyle
Writing is the building blocks of history. Without it how would we know about the civil war, pre history times, or the world wars. Writing is all around us, some people don’t take the time to notice it. I’m going to talk about what writing is to me, a book I read that is important to me, and how it changes people. As soon as I hear the word writing, I think of the following things. Don’t let memories “be blown away by the wind.” (Allende 974) You should record your thoughts and feelings down, so you can remember them for years to come. If no one recorded history how would we know about important events? This is why we have writing. Now we know what happened to the caveman and early life. Writing is good to record observations too. Without writing where would our world be? Our world to me would be nothing without writing. We see writing almost everywhere! We see it on TV, computers, and most importantly books. In this situation a book that I found that is very important is The Giver. The giver is about this society where everyone is the same. Everyone is very sheltered in the book. People in the book have never experienced snow, joy, anger. Now this little boy gets this special job where he gets to experience all those things. After a while he starts to realize the society that he was in wasn’t good. He started to wonder why everyone did the same things. He never experienced dreams before, some were good and some were bad. Then later in the book he gets basically fed up of everything. So he takes this baby and runs away from society. He wants the world to be filled with dreams, hope, and happiness. If we keep believing then “when we sing praises to the sun. The sun will praise us in return.” (shu ting 983) so basically if we keep trying and believing, then one day everything will work out. I know that at the end of the book it made me think a lot about the world and I felt really bad for the boy. Even though the book was fiction. Now that I read The Giver I really think everyone should read it. It gives you a perspective on other people’s lives. It also provided escapism and entertainment. When I was reading The Giver I could visualize the setting and everything about the book. I really enjoyed the book it made me think a lot though about people. In the book they used a lot of describing words. ReflectionApplication:
I’ll be honest this assignment is absolutely terrible. After reading this essay from ninth grade I realized how bad I was at forming complete sentences. I like the topic we were talking about in the essay but it could have been executed better. This was supposed to be a five paragraph essay but it looks like I forgot a body paragraph back then. I have many spelling errors in these paragraphs and not a strong thesis. Analysis: I would say a good method was reading the giver and trying to tie it into writing considering there was so much controversy with writing in the book. I do think if I talked about the book throughout each paragraph it would of made it sound like a better literary analysis. I had a planning web attached to my old paper so I know that was a good method of planning my ideas out before I wrote about them. Evaluation: I think this paper was trying to show us the importance of the written word. I think it was also trying to make us realize that writing is everywhere and without it we won’t make it far in life. It was also trying to teach us how to tie in novels with our writings, how to connect a book with everyday things. I need to improve with my choice of words and how I word them. I thin since then I have improved on that but I could always improve more. Most importantly I need to take my time in my writings. I always speed through everything to get it finished and you can tell it’s sloppy. I need to really take my time when writing because it will tie in the whole essay much better. Creation: I would say that I have the strength to tell a story but I need to learn how to tell it through writing and not talking. I need to pay attention and focus on the main topic. That’s one of the biggest things wrong in this paper because the topic is everywhere. I need to keep using bubble webs because it does indeed help. I also should have the dictionary with me so I can make sure I don’t spell everything wrong. One day I will be a better writer; practice does make perfect! |
